Spring Special Exhibition
From Edo to Tokyo

Tokyo is the center of politics, economy, and culture from Edo period. Many places in Edo have been taken up as the subject matter of ukiyo-e and have been drawn a lot by various ukiyo-e artists. This exhibition shows One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by Hiroshige and also modern Japanese woodblock prints themed "Tokyo". Please have a look at the changes from Edo to Tokyo through ukiyo-e.

Flowers are sometime subject for sketch, a part of landscape, or for crafts and designs. Flowers add a touch of colors to artworks and make them gorgeous. In this exhibition, we are unveiling our new collection Hiroshige’s “Bird-and-Flower” prints and also, we display our glass arts collection. Please enjoy the drawn images of colorful flowers.

Exhibition Portraits of Edo
July 23rd (Thu) – August 23rd (Sun), 2020
Portraits such as beauties and popular actors are the eternal themes in ukiyo-e. Hiroshige known as a great master of the landscape woodblock print, also drew detailed portraits of beautiful women and shibai-e (kabuki-themed painting). This exhibition focuses on Hiroshige’s expression of people.

Special Viewing The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido
August 27th (Thu) – October 4th (Sun), 2020
This is the yearly chance to see series "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido". Two ukiyo-e artists, Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen depicted various views alongside Kisokaido. Please enjoy the beauty of scenery together with travelers walking on Kisokaido in ukiyo-e.

Autumn Special Exhibition
The Golden Ukiyo-e Portraits of Beautiful Women and Actors Utamaro and His Era
Period 1: October 8th (Thu) – November 8th (Sun) , 2020
Period 2: November 12th (Thu) – December 6th (Sun), 2020
Kitagawa Utamaro known for his Bijin-ga (portraits of beautiful women) played an active role in the mid-Edo period. His era is called "The Golden Age of Ukiyo-e". This exhibition features Kitagawa Utamaro, Torii Kiyonaga who was famous for his portrayals of beautiful women, and also Toshusai Sharaku and Katsukawa Shunsen both who were masters of actor prints. We introduce ukiyo-e masterpieces from the golden age including beautiful original drawings.

After Hiroshige's death, his pupils took his name "Utagawa Hiroshige". Within his pupils, the one who depicted faithful to the original was Shigenobu "Hiroshige II". He was active from the end of Edo period and the early Meiji period. We invite you to explore "Hiroshige-ism" that Hiroshige II followed his master's footsteps.

Hiroshige left more than 20 editions of Tokaido series. Famous sights of the fifty-three stations (called Vertical Tokaido) was the only used upright screen position among Tokaido series and this edition has a high-angle composition like bird’s eye view. Please enjoy Hiroshige's masterpieces suggestive of Meisho zue.

Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes – Unveiling New Collection –
February 27th (Sat) – March 28th (Sun), 2021
"Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes" by Toyokuni III and Hiroshige become our new collection in 2019. Characteristics of this series is placing each station of Tokaido on a background and putting characters large in front. Hiroshige was in charge of landscapes and Toyokuni III depicted main characters. Take this opportunity to enjoy this gorgeous collaboration by two great ukiyo-e artists.
