What is Nakasendo Hiroshige Museum of Art?

About this museum

The historic Nakasendō road runs through Ena City, with Ōi-juku (Ōi post town), at its center, once thriving as one of the most important post towns among the 16 in the Mino region during its time.

The Nakasendo Hiroshige Museum of Art was established in September 2001. The museum primarily showcases the “Tanaka Collection” of Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e woodblock prints, generously donated by the late Haruo Tanaka, an ukiyo-e collector.

We aim to share the rich history and culture of Ena with the world by collecting, preserving, and researching Utagawa Hiroshige’s ukiyo-e, and making them accessible to the public. Our educational initiatives include lectures on ukiyo-e and Utagawa Hiroshige, along with activities that promote local art and culture.

The museum houses over 1,500 pieces of art, with a focus on ukiyo-e, and hosts exhibitions and special showcases throughout the year. One of our most treasured collections is “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō” (Tanaka Collection), which includes the famous “Nakatsugawa in the Rain.” Visitors can also enjoy videoes about ukiyo-e and Hiroshige, and learn about the ukiyo-e creation process in the 2nd floor Ukiyo-e Education area.
